Day: 2 Session Time/Number:   5/3p-4p Session Space: B

Convener: Maria
Notetaker: Ayo

Specific resources to share from session:  (links, books, organizations, articles etc.)
Happy documentary
The Happiness Project book
Discussion Notes:
1-9-90 rule, 1% create, 9% edit, 90% consume on the internet
Happy documentary
– how is it that people in less industrialized nations are happy?
The happiness project book
-write down the things that make you happy every day
– aim for contentedness
– are you a satisfier vs maximizer? Satisfier looks for the thing that satisfies the basic requirements. Maximizer looks at everything to select the best thing.
Need 5 good comments to equal the emotional impact of 1 negative comment
Bricoleur style programming
– collage of different pieces to bring them together
Study on mice- duration over which they eat makes a difference-shorter is better
Learning from human tutoring-Chi 2001
-students learn more when tutors prompt students to answer questions
Use “wow, that was really inappropriate” to call people out on things that they’ve said in a group that are inappropriate
Ted talk- kids will learn to do things on their own if you leave a computer near them with a person that asks “what have you learned today?” (http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_build_a_school_in_the_cloud?language=en)
Kids should explain things to their parents to do effective homework help. This is like pair programming.
Productive failure- you should get stuck, this helps you to learn better and learn to test
Bring people to an impasse -this is the context for direct instruction
Discovery based learning works best if you have a good underlying structure. If you don’t have this, you will spend too much cognitive load on learning those at the same time.
U of I has been doing studies to figure out how to improve intrinsic motivation -productive persistence.
