Cal Poly University Q and A (notes)

Why choose Cal Poly?

  • Smaller classes

  • Hands-on experience

    • Ex: Intro to Computer Science -> Work with different categories of programming like music, etc.

    • Ex: Technical Writing -> Work with iFixit to write a repair guide that will be published

  • Community

    • A lot of clubs with a lot of involvement like Society of Women Engineer, White Hat, Women in Software and Hardware

      • Mentor programs

    • Professors are friendly and helpful, have flexible office hours

    • Peers are a good resource

 

How are the Dorms? Apartments?

  • Depends on your personal preference:

    • Apartments = more private

    • Dorms = more social

 

Why did We Choose Computer Science?

  • For the versatility:

    • Ex: technology in other fields -> robotics, biological equipment, etc

  • For the creativity:

    • different ways to approach the same problem

  • For the practicality:

    • fun careers

 

UC vs Cal Poly?

  • UC – more research based

  • Cal Poly – more hands on, motto = “Learn by Doing”

 

What can Students in High School Do?

  • Get involved in clubs

  • Explore different classes and interests

  • Get involved in leadership
