Discussion about LinkedIn (professional), Facebook, MySpace (social) and Twitter (social)
But it turns out that all 3 websites can be utilized for professional purposes.
LinkedIn is commonly thought to be professional, because it highlights work experience, resume, and links from businesses. Used to find people who work in the same businesses, or have common business intrests. Good for introductions to others, that someone knows. Good for a name in a company to send a resume to. Think of it as an online Rolodex. The drawbacks, are that it has also has been used for spamming.
Facebook is commonly thought of as a social network site, but many use it for marketing purposes. It is a great place to direct and control your image and brand. Be mindful of the amount and type of information out there. Use privacy tools
Some have 2 Facebook accounts: one for business and one for personal.
Facebook has pages for Public view, get fans who don’t have to login. Can also link twitter /Facebook/LinkIn so you can cross promote your site. These public view page are good for one way communication. Whereas Facebook groups are more two way conversations.
General
All these sites are good, but once you start you need to maintain it. Nothing worse than outdated info.
Good discussion on Twitter and all the tools and groups and ways you communicate and follow others. Recommend How to use Twitter as a Twool by Guy Kawasaki. http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2008/12/how-to-use-twit.html Lots of twitter tools on line.
Twitter be sure to get your profile to describe you, make it unique. Twitter is great for meeting people with your interests. Some use it to just communicate with family on a daily basis. Some use it to meet new people in the local area. Tweet Local.
Privacy and Security
Privacy and Security is an issue for all these sites, but no way to avoid these websites, since the information is out there anyway.
