Issue/Topic: Technical Interviewing
Session: 7-G Bay Area Jan 2009
Convener: Karen McAdams
Notes-taker: Krista Van Laan
Discussion notes:
There was a lot of discussion about all aspects of interviewing. Some of the discussion points:
- There is a huge range of requests from technical interviewers, much more and different topics than 5 years ago.
- A lot of people do not know how to interview and this can make the interview difficult for the interviewee.
- Remember that you are not only being interviewed, but you are also “interviewing” the hiring manager to see if it’s a potential fit for you.
- A lot of standard interview questions can be found online so you can practice. To perfect your style, practice with your friends but also record yourself in front of a camera so you can see what mannerisms to avoid.
- It is a good idea to google your interviewers so you can see what interests them. Be aware they are probably also googling you.
- Networking is key, however you do it. (Online and in person.)
- A good way to get your expertise published online is to participate in linkedin.com answers and questions. Answering a lot of questions can position you as an expert in this area.
- If you’re a beginner, volunteer work is good and one good way to get that experience is volunteering as an Open Source contributor.
