The difficulty of saying no at work leads to feelings of guilt when excessive expectations aren’t met. Saying no is always harder for women. Repeatedly falling asleep while playing with your kids is a danger sign.
It’s easy to feel that you’re always disappointing people when you live in a busy place like the Bay Area. Making a reasonable assessment of your own productivity can be tough when opportunities are so plentiful. Remember that taking time off makes it clear what valuable functions you perform! Learning a company’s natural annual rhythm allows an employee to take leave when doing so will minimally impact the team’s schedule.
Sharing your calendar with coworkers makes visible to them not only when you’re free, but how genuinely busy you are. Be sure to put buffers in your calendar that delimit the times when you must drive from one place to another, or prepare for a meeting.
Schedule a block of time on your calendar for important tasks (e.g. tax preparation) even when the time that they can be accomplished is not fixed. Set appointments with yourself, and keep them! Remind coworkers of your upcoming vacation by putting a red-font one-line addition in your email signature the week before. Schedule breaks in your calendar and take them no matter what.
A connected watch can be a big help. A watch that vibrates when calendar reminders fire is more robust reminder than a phone chime. People joke about the practice of leaving sticky note reminders all around the house, but the method works.
Videoconferencing is a better tool for making a good impression. Even when working from home, try to schedule video conferences and wear professional clothing to attend them.
Make a real effort to delegate tasks both in your personal and work lives. Get your children to perform chores! Preparing all your meals for the week on the weekend is a great way to make sure that you eat healthy even when you’re busy.
Getting started on a task, even a bit, greatly lowers stress. Promise yourself that you’ll work 15 minutes a day towards a big goal, and actually keep your promise.
