Samantha has been participating in She’s Geeky – Bay Area events with her mom, Lauren Barghout, since 2009. Now she is starting The New York Code and Design Academy and is looking for financial support to help with NYC living expenses. Please consider making a donation to her efforts here.
Dear She’s Geeky Friends,
I first became interested in computer programming when I attended the San Francisco Bay Area She’s Geeky unConference at the age of 9 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. There I met extremely talented and successful women software engineers and web developers.
A woman at She’s Geeky invited me to take an html/css class at Blazing Cloud in San Francisco and I loved it. Check out the rap video that my classmate Khara Cara did for the class (I’m dancing in it with my Mom) and thank you for the mother/daughter scholarship, Heroku!
After graduating from high school, I took a part-time internship at the architecture firm Urban Associates in Manhattan, New York City. I also took short introductory classes at the Flatiron School including: Programming For Non-Programmers Bootcamp, Introduction to Ruby On Rails Workshop and HTML & CSS and started on the EdX online course Introduction to Computer Programming using Python.
Now that I’ve taken introductory courses, the next big step is immersing myself in a full-time learning environment. I’m enrolled in The New York Code and Design Academy full stack web development program. Thanks to help from family, my tuition is covered. I would like your support helping me cover living expenses, while I enrolled. In return for support from my friends and community, I’ll post bug fixes for open source projects (after I learn enough programming) and tweet them–giving each bug fix a funny name.
Thank you for your help!
