She's Geeky: A Women's Tech (un)Conference

---------

She's Geeky is putting some money into the Girl Geek Revolution evening Thursday June 26th at the Sugar Cafe from 6-9.

---------

The She's Geeky (un)conference provides an agenda-free and friendly environment for women who not only care about building technology that is useful for people, but who also want to encourage more women to get involved.

We are planning to host She's Geeky East in the fall in NYC. There are meetups in DC, NYC and Boston to prepare for the fall conference between July 9th and 13th. Join our Facebook Group to get notified of these and RSVP when we annouce.

She's Geeky West will be in the Winter in the Bay Area. Joining the facebook group is the best way to get updates.

Feel free to contact us at <%= email 'shesgeeky@gmail.com' %>

----------

She's Geeky is designed to provide women who self-identify as geeky and who are engaged in various technology-focused disciplines with a gathering space in which they can exchange skills and discuss ideas and form community across and within disciplines.

Our goal is to create an open space forum for women in tech to come together to:

Exchange skills and learning from women from diverse fields of technology.

Connect the diverse range of women in technology, computing, entrepreneurship, funding, hardware, open source, nonprofit and any other technical geeky field.

This is an unconference so it will have an agenda created by the people who attend.

What are some of the realizations, best practices and strategies to keep women geeks, business people and entrepreneurs grounded, authentic and in control--even when holding your space gets challenging? Susan Mernit and some others will share thoughts and strategies on this topic and facilitate a discussion that will be very relevant to every woman who wants to do a better job at feeling heard.

This session will engage in an open discussion between VCs and women entrepreneurs and those thinking about entrepreneurship. We will start with a short information sharing about what VCs are, how people become VCs, how they make their funds, where they get the money, who they are responsible to, and what they think about in their capacity as VCs. We'll hear about why VC's do what they do, what they like and dislike, why they think there are few women in the business, and how it affects funding and the kinds of technologies developed. Next, we'll get to the meat of the problem: addressing what an entrepreneur needs to know about funding when starting a company. And we'll brainstorm with everyone there about how to solve problems, who to go to for information, what elements are needed for a presentation, what gets funded, and how to get a VC over the line to get something funded

Online video allows anyone to create an internet tv channel. Whether your message is personal, professional, political, or just playful, the tools are now accessible and affordable. And though it's easy compared to creating traditional video media, it still requires a bit of geekiness.

We will take you through the pros and cons of adding video blogging to your online presence, and demonstrate a few sample workflows - from "get it up now!" to building a branded internet tv presence for you and/or your business.

Bring your cameras - even most small "still" cameras will take decent video clips these days.

The online world changed human sexuality forever as we know it; what the internet did for sexual privacy, advocacy, understanding and the landscape of pornography is still yet to be understood. At the core of all this is sexual privacy online. Ceiling Cat Hates Your Porn: Sexual Privacy Online discusses the main target groups affected by internet sexual privacy -- everyone, but especially underserved, maligned, misunderstood communities from GLBT to BDSM, women, people needing accurate sex info and urgent nonbiased medical information and beyond.

We'll be looking at example cases of privacy issues, such as the "Craigslist experiment"; 2257 laws for performers, businesses; 2257 laws for social networking sites and their users; porn companies using 2257 against "piracy"; the police officer recently fired for having an adult site. For the porn consumer, sexual privacy online will be described as a case of informed risk and an attempt at harm reduction. "Jane user" will learn what she can do to ensure her sexual privacy online (the user's perspective),, and why it's urgent for them to do so.

I'm interested in seeing more women in the Open Source movement. One of the ways Open Source spreads is through direct advocacy, but many participants are lacking in compelling presentation skills, and its especially rare to see women volunteering to present. Lightning Talks are a way to hone presentations skills while having a bit of fun. Lightning Talks are now a feature of many Open Source conferences worldwide. This tutorial will offer useful and practical information on how to give a compelling talk in under 5 minutes. Tutorial participants will each have an opportunity to give a Lightning Talk and will be given private feedback. These skills are perfectly transferrable to non-Open Source topics as well.

Where do I go from here

Where do we go from here?

Convener: Dee Adams

Note from BJ about these notes: These notes were taken as a quasi-dialogue map in Compendium and then exported to text, so the formatting on the transcript may be weird. The notes capture many of the participants comments in their own words, so the "I" statements here can be from anyone in the group. I haven't found a good way to post the graphical version of the maps yet.

How do we hold on to the connections and supportive environment we've made here?

She's Geeky organizers are looking at some options for after this event

Some regret that She's Geeky isn't an organization

But also some appeal to this being new and less well-established

Workshopping

Peer-to-peer mentoring

Do another one in New York

What are there resources to do?

Primary unique value here is the unconference format

Also it's small enough to talk with women one-to-one after -- or if you couldn't attend -- their session

Other resources for women in technology

WITI

Anita Borg Institute

NCWIT

What's next career-wise?

I like what I do but I want a new challenge

I don't like my job and want a new challenge

I want to give back by doing more meaningful work

How do build on what I already know how to do?

Can I move my user experience design experience from Yahoo to medical technology or social change?

There are many social change organizations who can use technical/design expertise

Benetech is an example

I quit my job and am trying to forge a new path

Where is feminism in this discussion?

Liza has a mailing list of feminist bloggers

Feeling like I have to do everything because I can and because my ltitle sister is watching

It's so much a part of what we're doing that we're not even mentioning it!

Even the president of NOW says she's not a "by the book" feminist

There's no one book

I changed my job after I had a child

Susan transitioned from poetry/fine arts to journalism/publishing to editing/Internet

Having a child is a great focusing device; you have to learn to manage your time well

Worksharing can help

Timing is challenging

No perfect time

What's the right sequence?

Concerns about uninsurability can keep us tied to jobs

Which are the real issues that keep us tied to jobs and which are the ones we only imagine?

Elizabeth provides tech services to arts and education organizations

Need at least a small network of supporters and co-conspirators

Women have trouble negotiating on our own account but not on each others'

Making commitments to them helps in holding self accountable, and in getting pushes to move forward

Need to be held accountable, whether it's weight loss or job search

You can use a blog to make that commitment and hold yourself accountable

Keeping the commitment can be easier than explaining why you didn't

We could form a group of those working on career changes to support each other

I want to clean up some of what we've created on the web

Liza going to work on an oral history of the web

Leave something better for my kid

Balance is always an issue in my life

How to have balance outside of technology?

Which are the real issues that keep us tied to jobs and which are the ones we only imagine?

Do something for yourself

Consulting is one way

What's next shorter term and longer term?

The way women are treated online seems to have gone backward exponentially

Really bothers me to see young women accept this and even perpetuate it

Need to teach new media education and socialization

Risks

What would it take to establish norms and apply peer pressure on what's acceptable behavior?

Look at food issues as an example; can you relate to it without judgement

Netiquette

Be a change agent

Extend the authority you've established in one area into others you care about

LettingGoSayingNo

Letting Go and Saying No

Convener and note-taker: BJ Wishinsky

This session was a spin-off from the one on diversity and supporting technical women. There were a number of women who wanted to talk more about how to say no, and I offered this existing material I'd created on Letting Go (and saying no) as a tool for time management and work/life balance. We started with the section on how to say No and then went through some of the other material once we were through that. A few notes from our conversation follow the slides.

| View | Upload your own

Highlights from the discussion:

We talked about fear around delegating tasks to others. I can't remember which participant said this (feel free to take credit here!), but it's so on target: "It's about coming from a place of abundance instead of a place of fear."

Another idea around delegation: the circle of referrals. You may refer a requestor to someone else when you're too busy, but that person may refer interesting work back to you at a later date.

What information can you put on the web once and point people to, rather than having to spend time explaining?

Add people's questions (and your answers) to an FAQ.

One of the things you have to manage is that what's urgent to others may not be urgent to you. You may need to train people to come to you before things get urgent.

A trick for getting started, getting things done, or breaking through procrastination: Make yourself spend 15 (or 30) minutes a day on a task.

Google Geo API's: KML, Maps API

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) :

  - Both maps (online) and earth (3D app) support KML. (also mashups and MS Maps)

  - Sitemap: Include KML files in your sitemap if you want Google to index it.

      - You can get indexed as a "community map" blue marker when you search then "show all"

"My Maps" tab in Google maps interactively create KML

   - Interactive polygon editor then add description, iconn et. (KMZ is zipped KML)

In addition to quick and dirty "My Maps " you can generate KML from a database (eg PHP mySQL) need to "geocode" addresses or can create coordinates from a google spread sheet.

Google Maps API:

googlemapsapi.blogspot.com (blog)

http://gmaps-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk (samples)

http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/ (documentation)

Online "google maps api introduction" explains how to create use JS Maps API - map types, markers, driving directions, etc..interactive demo

Pamela started an OSS maps API library in January: http://gmaps-utility-library.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

Trick to getting geocodes in gmaps: "link to this page" has the lat/long etc. of the center of the map or use batchgeocode.com.

Can also use GeoRSS for things like geotagging bogs

We just added clickable polygons, useful for things like "find states" game: http://googlemapsapi.blogspot.com/2007/10/clickable-polys-old-school-image-maps.html

Google Maps API google group is an amazing community, post questions there: http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Maps-API/topics

Call for Proposals: SEAMLESS 2008
---------------------------------------------------------
The Museum of Science Boston will present the 3rd SEAMLESS: Computational
Couture in 2008. Co-produced by the Museum of Science, Christine Liu and
Amanda Parkes, the show will take place at the Museum of Science on
Wednesday, January 30, 8pm. This year the show will be a living exhibition
of fashion, an event combining the fun and glamour of a runway show with
the personal engagement of interactive installations.

We are looking for fashion design which pushes the boundaries of technology
-- computational & conceptual couture & wearables, fashion with a social
agenda concerning technology (although may not have embedded technology),
and fashion produced using algorithmic fabrication or innovative
manufacturing techniques.
Because of the exhibition format, it will also be
possible to show architectural textile installations, we are also open to
submissions in this category.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 5PM EST
You may also email with questions before the submission deadline.
Group Poem

You Betcha She’s Geeky

Yes, there are challenges for women in technology.

    Not being run over
    Not being overshadowed
                    by Type A men.

A shortage of female role models
            and mentors.

    being sisters to fellow co-workers

    Sustaining work-life balance

    In the minority

    want to be a leader

being seen as assertive - not a bitch

smart and capable, but having to work twice as hard

pretty -- but not in marketing or PR

And yes, it’s true:

men are not as geeky about feminism as we would like them to be.

About that ‘being sisters to fellow co-workers’ thing:

Damn it! Why don’t women in technology in higher management
            take women fellows more seriously???!!

Here’s what we want - what we deserve:

    Respect and recognition!

    Visibility!

    Support other women!

Why?

Because women have potential to do something that nobody else can do:

We can...

    ...be comfortable being ourselves.

    ...understand, with compassion.

    ... put our egos aside.

It is easier for us to collaborate.

And we should encourage men to learn from us, too.

Hey, you know what?

It’s okay to be an accidental techie. Lots of us are.

You know what else?

We can bring a beautiful child into the world
yet not stop working towards our goals and dreams.

You know what we do when faced with challenges?

    We just become more determined.

        and: inspired!

What will the world be like when women in technology are

nurtured welcomed and supported for doing their marvelous work?

Communication, connection and open-mindedness will mean better ideas.

More technology products will be built with the end user in mind

and people will be less frustrated with them.

We will not be...

...our own white-male, old boy network --

        but instead:

            a diverse, old-“persons” network.

What will the world be like?

More people will play and sing music.

The world will be a much more fun and interesting place,
where technology will be seen as

                creative smart and genius.

We. Are. Incredible.

It’s about time we have She’s Geeky.

She’s Geeky has power.

Now: Where do we want to take it from here?

Questions we should be asking

Session Notes: She’s Geeky 10/23/07

Inquiry: What are the Challenging Questions We Should Be Asking Ourselves? Each Other?

Lisa Heft invited this session both to offer people a space to share some challenging questions and to share this particular tool / process that facilitators such as herself sometimes use for engaging inquiry and dialogue with a group.

The process begins with the host sharing the theme or topic for discussion, sharing a few thoughts, then ending by giving a rich, thoughtful question to the next person sitting in the circle. There is no cross-talk dialogue and the group’s job is not to answer the specific questions, but to instead let them hang in the air - because it is through some of our unanswered questions that our richest learning and shifts in thinking can occur.

Lisa began with the question that is the topic title for this session: What are the challenging questions we should be asking ourselves and each other? The following is the conversation - each paragraph represents the next person in the circle.

Erwin Schreodinger was a famous scientist - 1946 he wrote the book “What is Life?”, and in this book he outlined the problem with science as he knew it. This was very fascinating to me - this problem is basically one that has some relevance across gender boundaries. The problem with science is that it can’t really deal with life - can’t really deal with things that we see in biology and ecology and other areas. If I could use fancy words I would say the science we have today is reductionist. This is a major problem because the big unsolved problems of today are not ones that science as science was envisioned can solve - and among those problems is artificial intelligence. The reason we don’t have that yet is we are approaching the problem with science, versus something better - and that something better is intuition based knowledge. Science insists on everything being perfect and measurable and that is wrong because that is only the way the brain works. So the question I have is: how do we convince the community of today that there is an alternative way to look at these problems, a way that would be more fruitful - a model based on intuition, which females we are supposed to have more of. This is a very big uphill battle. So how do we get there, to convince others of the value of intuition?

Your question as I hear it is how do we convince people to move to a more holistic model?
What I had in mind is a little bit more mundane. For anyone who was in the previous session on diversity guerilla tactics - one of my main emphases for coming to this conference - I work at Google and I’m the only one on my team. We are all fairly technical and I haven’t encountered any blatant discrimination - I don’t feel victimized - but my problem is that my boss - a woman - went on maternity leave, so now my group is completely male. Which is fine - I don’t feel I have to be one of the guys or treat myself differently, but I think it became very apparent when my boss left and I became the only woman on the team - one of the thoughts I have in this is ‘Who am I supposed to be?’ I worry, ‘So if I do this or that, is it going to look like ‘Oh she did that because she is a girl’? I feel like I need to be more...need to be a superstar so they can go ‘Oh look she can do that -and- she’s a girl’ I need to be a superstar to justify why I’m there. If I’m mediocre, it constantly stresses me out because I don’t want to be a woman representing mediocrity - which is what I’m afraid of. At the same time I feel like ... I guess it is definitely not a disadvantage being a woman on my team - I think, ‘Oh like I’m special, I stand out more, I get more attention - I’ll be noticed faster’. And then I feel I don’t deserve this attention. It’s getting a little Oprah here, but I wonder if anyone else feels this way, even working for a progressive organization?

I am also in same situation - like you, also a leader on my team. The best thing I think is to be yourself. I feel the challenge I have to prove myself. I mean, to be a girl - they might thing I am not good enough. One thing I have to do is prove myself - but I think it’s important not to think you cannot do it - just be yourself. And to prove yourself you have to have show them - you have to prove to them by showing the world, by working. In the meetings you can share your ideas - don’t think they might think you are stupid, just throw your ideas out, because if you don’t share your ideas the tension will be inside you. You have to take your feelings out and share your feelings and ideas, whatever you have. So I know that I have to prove myself - I know that I want to do but how do you approach basically? That depends on the institution you are in, depends on the profession you are in, the thing you are doing. And it totally depends on what you want to do. How to prove yourself?

That is a very good question, and something I think everyone should ask themselves. And I think I ask that every day too. Yes. A good question. Because I have been working at Yahoo, and not too many female engineers are working there. Our group is especially good in that sense that we do have 5 female engineers including me out of 34 engineers - and that’s pretty high compared to any other group I have worked with. But I do have the experience where there were 11 engineers total and I was the single female engineer. And I think it’s worse in a startup than a bigger corporation. In a startup you have to do things yourself and work 20 hours a day, which is harder. I do feel I have to constantly prove that I am better than them - not just technically but as a person - and I am also under the pressure of ‘Oh she’s a girl’. Like I should be in charge of all the nurturing of the team - well I am not a mother. Given my current situation where I’m a manager now, I’m still trying to bring that to the table - I am in charge of all the fun stuff. I’m not a fun person, but I am in charge of the fun events. It’s kind of challenging and I have to prove to everyone too - that I’m a fun person (laughter). And I do constantly feel that I have to give answers to most of their questions. I don’t really know the answers, but I tell them right away, ‘Yes, this is the answer’ - but then sometimes I feel I have to tell them a better answer. It’s hard. The other thing you mention
