She's Geeky: A Women's Tech (un)Conference

She's Geeky is putting some money into the Girl Geek Revolution evening Thursday June 26th at the Sugar Cafe from 6-9.

The She's Geeky (un)conference provides an agenda-free and friendly environment for women who not only care about building technology that is useful for people, but who also want to encourage more women to get involved.

We are planning to host She's Geeky East in the fall in NYC. There are meetups in DC, NYC and Boston to prepare for the fall conference between July 9th and 13th. Join our Facebook Group to get notified of these and RSVP when we annouce.

She's Geeky West will be in the Winter in the Bay Area. Joining the facebook group is the best way to get updates.

She's Geeky is designed to provide women who self-identify as geeky and who are engaged in various technology-focused disciplines with a gathering space in which they can exchange skills and discuss ideas and form community across and within disciplines.

Our goal is to create an open space forum for women in tech to come together to:

Exchange skills and learning from women from diverse fields of technology.
Discuss topics about women and technology.
Connect the diverse range of women in technology, computing, entrepreneurship, funding, hardware, open source, nonprofit and any other technical geeky field.

This is an unconference so it will have an agenda created by the people who attend.

Computer History Museum, Mountain View, CA.

When?

October 22-23

Start Time: Noon on Monday

8:30 am Tuesday (8 am breakfast)

Ending Time: Close 6pm on Tuesday.

We will have evening 'entertainment' on Monday night. The event will go late until about 9 or so.

If you are on the East Coast, we welcome you to come out here for this event. You can fly Monday morning and be back on the Tuesday red-eye, only taking two days out of life and not missing ANY of the conference.

How Much?

Cost $175 regular price (the early bird price of $125 ended Sept 30)

We will provide lunch and dinner on Monday, and breakfast and lunch on Tuesday.

User Experience Design: Kaari Peterson & Dee Adams Space A

What it is, why it matters, and how to work with UED on your product or business if you haven’t done this before.

Do you know how to take advantage of UED and how to engage with designers? Is UED a term that leaves you wondering What do they do? This interactive workshop and discussion with Yahoo! Design Director Kaari Peterson, who worked on Adobe Acrobat, and De Adams, a veritable UED Goddess at Yahoo! will give you real world, useful information on working with designers and present case studies and advice on how design can help you build products and differentiate your business. A must attend if you’re interested in creating any type of application.

Owning Your Power: Susan Mernit and Others Space B

As women in what are often a male-dominated set of arenas, how can we become more comfortable claiming and using our own power? What are some of the realizations, best practices and strategies to keep women geeks, business people and entrepreneurs grounded, authentic and in control--even when holding your space gets challenging? Susan Mernit and some others will share thoughts and strategies on this topic and facilitate a discussion that will be very relevant to every woman who wants to do a better job at feeling heard.

Susan Mernit leads the product team at Yahoo Personals, is an organizer of She's Geeky, a CE for and advisor to Blogher, and someone who's been involved in building products and businesses on the Net since back in the day--and she's still jazzed about it.

VCs and Women in Tech: A Brainstorm with Women VCs and Entrepreneurs - Space G

This session will engage in an open discussion between VCs and women entrepreneurs and those thinking about entrepreneurship. We will start with a short information sharing about what VCs are, how people become VCs, how they make their funds, where they get the money, who they are responsible to, and what they think about in their capacity as VCs. We'll hear about why VC's do what they do, what they like and dislike, why they think there are few women in the business, and how it affects funding and the kinds of technologies developed. Next, we'll get to the meat of the problem: addressing what an entrepreneur needs to know about funding when starting a company. And we'll brainstorm with everyone there about how to solve problems, who to go to for information, what elements are needed for a presentation, what gets funded, and how to get a VC over the line to get something funded

Why pubic speaking at She's Geeky? Because we know that there is a dearth of women speakers at events and conferences, and we know that there is a kind of feedback loop between women speaking at an event, showing her expertise and experience, and being asked to work in leadership roles. Many women fall into technology development, and into positions that might allow them to progress to positions of power, but good speaking skill is critical for this.

Lura is a renowned speaking trainer and acting coach. She offers a 2 hour session to practice techniques that will help you realize your goals in your career outside and within your workspaces. She has taught one day workshops at Citizen Space and teaches privately. We are lucky to have such a talented speaking trainer and if you have any interest training, I'd highly recommend that you attend her session.

Online video allows anyone to create an internet tv channel. Whether your message is personal, professional, political, or just playful, the tools are now accessible and affordable. And though it's easy compared to creating traditional video media, it still requires a bit of geekiness.

We will take you through the pros and cons of adding video blogging to your online presence, and demonstrate a few sample workflows - from "get it up now!" to building a branded internet tv presence for you and/or your business.

Bring your cameras - even most small "still" cameras will take decent video clips these days.

Ceiling Cat Hates Your Porn: Sexual Privacy Online: Violet Blue Space C

The online world changed human sexuality forever as we know it; what the internet did for sexual privacy, advocacy, understanding and the landscape of pornography is still yet to be understood. At the core of all this is sexual privacy online. Ceiling Cat Hates Your Porn: Sexual Privacy Online discusses the main target groups affected by internet sexual privacy -- everyone, but especially underserved, maligned, misunderstood communities from GLBT to BDSM, women, people needing accurate sex info and urgent nonbiased medical information and beyond.

We'll be looking at example cases of privacy issues, such as the "Craigslist experiment"; 2257 laws for performers, businesses; 2257 laws for social networking sites and their users; porn companies using 2257 against "piracy"; the police officer recently fired for having an adult site. For the porn consumer, sexual privacy online will be described as a case of informed risk and an attempt at harm reduction. "Jane user" will learn what she can do to ensure her sexual privacy online (the user's perspective),, and why it's urgent for them to do so.

Lightening talks (10 people): Danese Cooper Space E

I'm interested in seeing more women in the Open Source movement. One of the ways Open Source spreads is through direct advocacy, but many participants are lacking in compelling presentation skills, and its especially rare to see women volunteering to present. Lightning Talks are a way to hone presentations skills while having a bit of fun. Lightning Talks are now a feature of many Open Source conferences worldwide. This tutorial will offer useful and practical information on how to give a compelling talk in under 5 minutes. Tutorial participants will each have an opportunity to give a Lightning Talk and will be given private feedback. These skills are perfectly transferrable to non-Open Source topics as well.

Letting Go and Saying No

This session was a spin-off from the one on diversity and supporting technical women. There were a number of women who wanted to talk more about how to say no, and I offered this existing material I'd created on Letting Go (and saying no) as a tool for time management and work/life balance. We started with the section on how to say No and then went through some of the other material once we were through that. A few notes from our conversation follow the slides.

Highlights from the discussion:

We talked about fear around delegating tasks to others. I can't remember which participant said this (feel free to take credit here!), but it's so on target: "It's about coming from a place of abundance instead of a place of fear."
Another idea around delegation: the circle of referrals. You may refer a requestor to someone else when you're too busy, but that person may refer interesting work back to you at a later date.
What information can you put on the web once and point people to, rather than having to spend time explaining?
Add people's questions (and your answers) to an FAQ.
One of the things you have to manage is that what's urgent to others may not be urgent to you. You may need to train people to come to you before things get urgent.
A trick for getting started, getting things done, or breaking through procrastination: Make yourself spend 15 (or 30) minutes a day on a task.

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) :

- Both maps (online) and earth (3D app) support KML. (also mashups and MS Maps)

- Sitemap: Include KML files in your sitemap if you want Google to index it.

- You can get indexed as a "community map" blue marker when you search then "show all"

"My Maps" tab in Google maps interactively create KML

- Interactive polygon editor then add description, iconn et. (KMZ is zipped KML)

In addition to quick and dirty "My Maps " you can generate KML from a database (eg PHP mySQL) need to "geocode" addresses or can create coordinates from a google spread sheet.

Trick to getting geocodes in gmaps: "link to this page" has the lat/long etc. of the center of the map or use batchgeocode.com.

The Museum of Science Boston will present the 3rd SEAMLESS: Computational
Couture in 2008. Co-produced by the Museum of Science, Christine Liu and
Amanda Parkes, the show will take place at the Museum of Science on
Wednesday, January 30, 8pm. This year the show will be a living exhibition
of fashion, an event combining the fun and glamour of a runway show with
the personal engagement of interactive installations.

We are looking for fashion design which pushes the boundaries of technology
-- computational & conceptual couture & wearables, fashion with a social
agenda concerning technology (although may not have embedded technology),
and fashion produced using algorithmic fabrication or innovative
manufacturing techniques.

Because of the exhibition format, it will also be
possible to show architectural textile installations, we are also open to
submissions in this category.

You Betcha She’s Geeky

Yes, there are challenges for women in technology.

    Not being run over
    Not being overshadowed
                    by Type A men.

    A shortage of female role models
            and mentors.

    being sisters to fellow co-workers

    Sustaining work-life balance

    In the minority

    want to be a leader

    being seen as assertive - not a bitch

    smart and capable, but having to work twice as hard

    pretty -- but not in marketing or PR

And yes, it’s true:

    men are not as geeky about feminism as we would like them to be.

About that ‘being sisters to fellow co-workers’ thing:

    Damn it! Why don’t women in technology in higher management
            take women fellows more seriously???!!

Here’s what we want - what we deserve:

    Respect and recognition!

    Visibility!

    Support other women!

Why?

Because women have potential to do something that nobody else can do:

We can...

    ...be comfortable being ourselves.

    ...understand, with compassion.

    ... put our egos aside.

    It is easier for us to collaborate.

        And we should encourage men to learn from us, too.

Hey, you know what?

    It’s okay to be an accidental techie. Lots of us are.

You know what else?

    We can bring a beautiful child into the world
        yet not stop working towards our goals and dreams.

You know what we do when faced with challenges?

    We just become more determined.

        and: inspired!

What will the world be like when women in technology are

        nurtured    welcomed    and supported for doing their marvelous work?

Communication, connection and open-mindedness will mean better ideas.

More technology products will be built with the end user in mind

    and people will be less frustrated with them.

We will not be...

    ...our own white-male, old boy network --

        but instead:

            a diverse, old-“persons” network.

What will the world be like?

        More people will play and sing music.

        The world will be a much more fun and interesting place,
