Men can easily mentor each other. There can be some difficulties where they perceive you as too nice. You may have to cherry pick what they tell you and figure out what will essentially help you.
Mentors put in time while sponsors put their reputation on the line. Sponsors can help broadcast your knowledge and skills. It is a 2-way street, so you have to find out how you can contribute for them.
Make sure it fits into their life (e.g. grab coffee, grab lunch).
It helps to come with a concrete dilemma (e.g. “I’m applying to this job. Could you look at my resume?”). Personal connection helps.
Don’t discount co-mentorship.
In disruptive technology, it may be difficult to find mentors. Therefore, you need to find a coach or co-coach.
Books and friends can help, if you don’t have a mentor.
