Elizabeth’s 5 key points to employee (and self!) review:
1. Are you technically proficient? (How well do you know your job?)
2. Do you communicate effectively? (Via all methods as appropriate? And timely?)
3. Are you proactive? Do you take initiative?
4. Are you reliable? How accountable are you?
5. (Overall.) Do you have others’ trust?
Rank each of these on a 1 (awful) to 5 (great) point scale. Consider examples.
With a score in range:
23-25: Promote! Bonus!
18-22: Needs mentoring, better role explanation
14-18: Project plan and hand holding
13 and below: find a job that is more aligned with your skills
(For a very fast review, make it a yes/no instead of 1-5)
Elecia suggests evaluating yourself so you are armed with self-awareness before you talk to your boss about receiving what you are worth. Write down:
Hits are things that went well. The examples associated with the positive points you got from Elizabeth’s questions are hits. Examples of areas with lower scores are misses.
Highlights are the things special to this year (this performance evaluation period). They are the movie montage from the year.
Reflections are introspective. They might be regrets or points of pride. What would you do differently? What made you happy?
Goals are the things you need to do to get all the points from Elizabeth’s questions, the things you need to do better.
With the list of many points, many examples, many thoughts, you will be prepared to talk to your boss about what you did and what you want.
